COMFEE earned first place by cleaning, not by looking small
Good Housekeeping tested the exact 6-liter COMFEE model with dried egg yolk and chocolate syrup. It scored almost perfectly for cleaning, and dishes came out completely dry in every run when Auto Open was enabled. Serious Eats also made this model its top pick after testing seven countertop machines; its loaded dishes were clean and dry after the 130-minute cycle.
That does not mean every crowded rack will come out perfect. It means this exact model has stronger evidence than most look-alike machines whose listings repeat the same promises without a controlled test behind them.
The rack decides whether this feels useful
In the Serious Eats test, the largest COMFEE load was two dinner plates, three small plates, one glass, two bowls, two mugs, and two place settings of cutlery. That is genuinely useful after a small meal. It is not dinner for two plus a frying pan, cutting board, and serving bowl.
The manual shows two 10-inch dinner plates. Amazon says one plate up to about 10.5 inches can fit, but a deep rim or a different loading angle can change that answer. Measure the plates used every day, not the one small plate kept for guests.
Drying depends on the cycle you choose
COMFEE's door can pop open near the end of Normal, Baby Care, and Glass cycles so moisture escapes. Rapid is a 40-minute wash without that drying step. If a quick load is still damp, that is not the same experience as the longer Auto Open program tested by reviewers.
Plastic cups and bowls also tend to hold droplets in their rims. For either machine, angle hollow items so water can run out instead of collecting on top.
HAVA R09 makes its best case in hard water
R09's built-in softener uses dishwasher salt to reduce minerals before they leave white film on dishes and build up inside the machine. Use dishwasher salt only—not table salt or ordinary pellets. The machine can run without it, but the salt warning remains on.
The 5-liter tank, 31.5-pound body, seven wash cycles, separate 60-minute Dry mode, and optional ventilation make R09 look flexible on paper. Exact-model owner reports repeatedly mention good cleaning and the convenience of tank filling, while individual reports also mention awkward large-pot fit and one failure near the end of the first year. We did not find a controlled R09 lab test comparable to COMFEE's.
Measure above it, in front of it, and toward the sink
Both machines are about 18 inches tall. Leave room above the rear fill opening, room in front for the door and rack, and a short safe route for the drain hose. COMFEE's manual gives an open-door depth of about 29.6 inches. A machine that fits under the cabinet but has to be dragged forward for every pitcher will not feel very portable.
COMFEE weighs 41.3 pounds and HAVA 31.5 pounds before water and dishes. These are countertop appliances, not something most people will comfortably lift in and out of a cupboard every night.
Who will be glad they bought one?
This category works best for one or two people without a built-in dishwasher who are willing to run small loads often. COMFEE is the safer first look when proven cleaning and drying matter most. HAVA R09 is the more specific choice when hard water and mineral film are already a daily nuisance.
Skip the tiny tank format if three or more people eat together, cookware is the main problem, or the only available counter is far from a sink. In that case, a larger faucet-connected countertop model or a rolling portable dishwasher will save more hand washing than a machine that needs two loads after every dinner.
